Exciting Surfing Competition in Puducheery

Make sure that you visit the Union territory of Puducherry
from August 23 to 25 or you will regret missing the live action of the country’s only international surfing festival.

‘The Summer Swell Challenge 2013’ as it is called, will be jointly presented by the tourism department and Kallialay Surf School (KASS) along with several other entities.

The tourism department, encouraged with the success of the initial event last year, planned to host the event for the second successive year to motivate the beginners and aspirants to take up surfing.

During the three day festival, which will start from 6 am on August 23 at the pier of Seagull’s beach front, more than 100 surfers, including 25 foreign surfers from US, Italy, Australia, France, Spain, Maldives and others will showcase their skills and proficiency.

The event is likely to attract more than 1,500 people over a period of three days.


The entry will be free. The competition will be held for three categories – under 16 yrs, between 16 and 25 yrs and 25 yrs and above. People who are keen can register to participate in the contest by sending an e-mail to summerchallenge@surfschoolindia.com with the information like name of the participant, age, address and identity proof.

The most promising Indian surfer will be awarded surfboards, including one custom surfboard, while other winners will be given board bags, caps, T-shirts, beach footwear, skateboards, beach towels and gift vouchers worth more than 30,000.

A skateboarding mini-ramp also will be an added attraction to this year’s event in which the best skaters from India and abroad will showcase their skills.

Surfing, which is a surface water sport, began gaining fame in the country which has a long coastline and recently more people have started showing interest in the water sport. Surfing has three chief subclasses - long boarding, short boarding and stand up paddle, based on the design of the board and its length, riding style and types of waves.
