History
of the Meenakshi Temple
The Shrine of Meenakshi
which is popularly known as Meenakshi temple of Madurai was established during
the administrative call of Chadayavarman Sundara Pandyan. According to
historical facts that it was in 12th century that temple came into
picture but it became celebrated during the call of 13th to 16th
century when 9 storey towers was established.
Hall of Thousand Pillars,
Puthu Mandapam, Ashta Sakthi Mnadapam, Vandiyoor Theppakulam, and Nayakkar
Mahal were all attributed by Nayakka rulers during his administrative time.
Mythology
According to folklore the
swaying deity of Meenakshi was cast out of fire and later she got married with
Lord Shiva and both lived happily within the ambience of Madurai as Lord
Sundareshwar and Goddess Meenakshi.
It is also believed that
Lord Indra figured out the temple when he drew a suyambu lingam. There is
another tale which is related with an origination of the temple, it is believed
that Lord Vishnu travelled a healthy distance to be a part of his sister wedding
ceremony but by the time he reached the site the marriage was solemnized
without his presence.
Gushed by anger of his insult he promised never to enter
the doors of Madurai and resided near Azaghar Kovil. Although he was convinced
by his sister and brother in law and his appeasement is celebrated as Azhaghar
Thiruvila.
